Alleppey or Alappuzha is a nice city located between the sea on the west, and the big network of canals, rivers and Vembanad lake on the east (the famous backwaters). The center of the city is limited with north and south canals, themselves connected with the western and eastern canals (see the link “Location” on the right).
Between and along the canals of the city, you can see different and nice districts, where you can have a pleasant walk : Mullakkal the main street for shopping, Old market (fruit, vegetable and spices), New Bazaar and Vellakinar near the Saint George syriac orthodox church, Zacharia Bazaar going to the railway station, the Gujarati district and its old houses and stores along south and west canals on the way to the lighthouse, the beach and its large “promenade” and the fishermen, and so on. |
Alleppey is famous all over the world because it is one of the main entrance to the backwaters, but also for its choir industry and the fantastic Nehru Trophy boat races (every second Saturday of August).
Below, some photos of the beach and the fishermen, of old buildings in Alleppey, of a houseboat and the backwaters, and of the Nehru Trophy boat races. |
